Scotland To Host Top Hoops Tourney
Scotland will host the European Senior Men's C Championship in Edinburgh next June, the first senior European basketball tournament to come to Scotland for over two decades.
Following a successul bid by the City of Edinburgh Council, who will support the event to the extent of £30,000, the championship will go ahead, not at Meadowbank Sports Centre, where the last European tournament and the recent Great Britain v Albania game were held, but at Edinburgh University's Pleasance Games Hall.
The event will take place from June 16 to 22, 2008 and extra seating and a special show court will have to be imported to bring the Pleasance facilities up to standard: "I'm delighted we've won the bid to host this event - we've worked closely with the University of Edinburgh to bring these Championships to the City," commented City of Edinburgh Council Festival and Events Champion Steve Cardownie.
"The success of this joint approach to a sport event is very exciting and something we're keen to build on for the future."
Jim Aitken, Director of the Centre for Sport and Exercise at the University of Edinburgh commented: "The University of Edinburgh is absolutely delighted to join with City of Edinburgh Council and Basketball Scotland to bring Championships to Edinburgh."
Scotland's men, sixth in the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne last year, will welcome the chance to perform at home after being without a single international last season due to budget problems.
Coach Iain Maclean and his team will be guaranteed five or six games in the eight-team tournament and, if they win it, would present a strong case for the side to move up to the European B Championships now that the Great Britain side have been promoted to Euro A and there is no conflict of interest.
Basketball Scotland will still have to resolve how to fill the gap in the senior women's international programme.
